What we build

Prairie Code AI is a custom software development workshop in Lawrence, Kansas. We serve clients across the whole state, not only the Lawrence area: founders, growing businesses, and university labs. Here is what we build and who each kind of work fits.

01

Custom software, built from the ground up

This is the core of the work. Web, mobile, and desktop applications, built from scratch for your operation, not assembled from a template. We handle the interface, the services behind it, and the infrastructure it runs on.

Where it earns its keep, we build AI and automation into the software itself: document understanding, decision support, an agent that does one job well. AI is a tool in this workshop. It is not the craftsman.

Most new software has to live alongside what you already run. We wire it into your CRM, your billing, and your existing instruments, so your data moves once, correctly.

If you are looking for a custom software developer in Kansas who builds the whole product and hands it to you finished, this is that work.

02

Research software for university labs

Kansas has research universities and grant-funded labs that need software no vendor sells off the shelf: a data pipeline for a specific instrument, a tool that turns a manual process into a documented one, an application built around how your lab actually works.

We build that software with the realities of a lab in mind. Grants end. Post-docs and grad students move on. Funding cycles are fixed before the code is written. We scope the work to fit the grant, document it clearly, and hand over software your successor can run without calling us first.

This is research software you own outright, not a subscription tied to a vendor who may not exist in five years.

03

A software partner for funded founders

If you have funding and an idea but no technical co-founder, we can be your engineering department. You bring the market knowledge and the customers. We bring the CTO-level judgment and the team to build the product.

We are not the shop to call if you want the fastest possible MVP at the lowest possible price. We are the shop to call if you want the product built correctly the first time, with a scope, a number, and a definition of done in writing before we start.

We take on a limited number of founder projects each year, so we can give each one the attention a first product needs.

04

Internal tools you own

Growing businesses often reach a point where spreadsheets break down and generic software almost fits but not quite. A CRM shaped like your actual pipeline. A dashboard over your real data. A logistics tool shaped like your actual routes.

We build that software for you, once, and it becomes yours: the code, the accounts, the data, all in your name from day one. You are not renting a seat in someone else's product and hoping the next price increase or feature change does not break your workflow. You own the tool the same way you own your equipment.

If we disappear tomorrow, the software keeps running. That is the point of building it this way.

05

What we do not build

We are a workshop, not an agency. One craftsman, Miles Bassett, leads every engagement personally, with the people needed to build it well. We do not run a large team, and we do not pretend to.

We do not build throwaway MVPs meant to be replaced later. We do not build on top of a SaaS platform and call it custom. We do not take on more projects than we can finish properly, so we turn down work that is not a fit and say so plainly.

We do not promise a ranking, a launch date, or a business outcome we do not control. We promise a finished product, built to a written scope, that you own when it is done.

Tell us what you need built

Every engagement starts with a call, not a sales pitch. Tell us what you are trying to build. We will give you an honest answer about whether custom software is worth it for you, and a straight answer if it is not.
